Historical Account

La Clé des Champs is a non-profit organization that supports people suffering from anxiety disorders.

It began in November 1990 when an agoraphobic person from North-End Ahuntsic felt the need to share her difficulties with other agoraphobics and decided to start a self-help group in her area. With the help of a community organizer from the local CLSC, she began La Clé des Champs.

In January 1994, La Clé des Champs developed a new formula of mutual assistance in small closed groups that better suited the needs of the clientele. The organization was incorporated in December 1994. At the first annual meeting, held in March 1996, a Board of Directors was officially nominated.

From the time of its foundation in 1991 until 1995, the services were provided by volunteers and personnel hired through government subsidized work programs. In 1996, La Clé des Champs received a grant from the Agence de la Santé et des Services Sociaux de Montréal and hired its first permanent employee. As the need of this type of service grew, a second person was hired in 1997.

Appearances on television as well as on radio and in newspapers have made La Clé des Champs known to the general population and to health care professionals. Consequently, in 1999, it hired three more permanent employees. The organization at first occupied premises at the CLSC in Ahuntsic. Then, in September 1998, because of lack of space, it had to move into a commercial building.

Our associates from other CLSCs have asked us to provide our services in their neighbourhoods.

In 2001, a group specifically designed for young people was formed. La Clé des Champs' head office is now located on Henri-Bourassa boulevard est, right near the Henri-Bourassa Metro Station .
